Overview

European Oak sapwood is generally 25-50mm wide and slightly lighter in colour to the heartwood, which is light brown to yellowish-brown, darkening later upon exposure.

European oak often shows a distinct silvery medullary ray figure. The annual rings are clearly marked by alternating zones of early-wood consisting of large pores, and conditions of growth accordingly govern the character of the wood to a great extent.

European oak has a coarse texture, which is characterized by open pores, although it takes all surface finishes well - it can be stained, polished, waxed, and glued satisfactorily, and takes liming and fuming treatments well.
