European Oak Edge Glued Panels & Worktops

European oak panel (3-layer)Found throughout Europe including the British Isles, and extending into Asia Minor and North Africa, European Oak is one of the more frequent species of tree to be found, and may be the dominant species in mixed wood lands. It is known also as English, French, Polish, Slavonian, etc oak, according to origin.

The sapwood of European Oak is generally 25-50mm wide and slightly lighter in colour to the heartwood , which is light brown to yellowish-brown, darkening later, while both have a similar grain pattern.

Quarter sawn European oak tends to show a distinct silvery medullary ray figure. The annual rings are clearly marked by alternating zones of early-wood consisting of large pores, and conditions of growth accordingly govern the character of the wood to a great extent. Close-grown, very light-coloured wood is given preference, while wood harvested from central Europe tends to be straighter and more uniform.

The weight of oak varies according to type from approx 670-720kg/m3 after drying.

European oak has a coarse texture, which is characterized by open pores, although it takes all surface finishes well and treatment presents no problems.

So-called brown oak is the result of fungus attack in the growing tree, which causes the wood first to assume a yellow colour, then a richer brown or reddish-brown.

European oak is well-known for its high strength properties, while the working and machining properties vary with the mild to tough material which either machines easily or with moderate difficulty. In general, oak finishes well from the planer or moulding machine although in some cases a reduction of cutting angle to 20 is preferable. The wood can be stained, polished, waxed, and glued satisfactorily, and takes liming and fuming treatments well.

Both full length and finger jointed oak panels are regularly used as oak worktops, and in the manufacture of all types of furniture.
