Purpleheart is sourced from Mexico through Central America and southward to southern Brazil, with the main supplies originating from the north-central part of the Brazilian Amazon region.

Freshly cut Purpleheart heartwood is brown, turning a deep purple upon exposure to air and eventually dark brown upon exposure to light.

The texture is medium to fine, and the grain is usually straight.

The wood takes finishes well and the unusual and unique colour of Purpleheart veneer makes this wood desirable for many speciality applications.
