European Yew Burr Veneer

European Yew Burr Veneer

European Yew is also known as Yew, Common Yew, and Yewtree. It is found throughout Europe, southern Asia, and northern Africa.

The narrow, whitish sapwood of European Yew is clearly demarcated from the heartwood, which is orange brown, red brown, or purplish brown when freshly cut, aging to a golden brown with exposure. There are fine brown streaks from the grain pattern and the wood often contains knots of varying sizes.

European Yew veneer is typically straight grained, sometimes curly and irregular, with an even, medium texture that can be worked to a highly polished finish.

European Yew Burr veneer is caused by abnormal growth, or excrescences, which are common to most trees. Irritation or injury forms an interwoven, contorted, or gnarly mass of dense woody tissue from which this veneer is harvested.
