Alder is also known as black alder and grey alder. The tree grows extensively across Europe to West Asia and North Africa. It is often used in the manufacture of bedrooms and kitchens.

Often combined with European birch in commercial plywood production, alder is generally considered a constructional veneer. However, many logs are chosen for veneer production, especially where the darker-coloured fine, irregular 'hair' streaks give the wood a decorative character, or where a particular log exhibits occasional pips and burrs or a strong curly figure.

Alder is almost white when freshly cut but quickly changes to a light tan or light brown with a yellow or reddish tinge when exposed to the air. Heartwood is formed only in trees of advanced age, and there is no visible boundary between heartwood and sapwood.

Alder veneer is straight grained and fine textured.
