Maple is also called Aprono, Bete, Ofun and Koul, and resembles American Black Walnut. It occurs in the deciduous forest type from Ivory Coast to Cameroon.

The sapwood is whitish and sharply demarcated from the heartwood, which is yellow brown or dark gray brown, frequently with a purplish cast, often showing light and dark bands.

The grain generally is straight and texture fine to medium. The lustre is low to medium and the wood lacks a distinct odour.
